IPL’s American Cousin Soon to Arrive

With Indian Premier League becoming a rage over a span of two years, other countries too are set to take their T-20 plunge. It’s just six months away when IPL’s US cousin will see the light of the world. USA is going to launch its inaugural T-20 series in October this year.

About the Teams

First season of the Indian Premier League
The 2008 Indian Premier League season is the debut season of the Indian Premier League, established by the BCCI in 2007. The season commenced on the 18 April 2008 and the final match will be held on 1 June 2008. The league consists of 8 teams. Each team will play a home match and an away match against every other team. The league matches will be followed by two semi-finals and a final match.

  • Deccan Chargers
  • Kolkata Knight Riders
  • Kings XI Punjab
  • Mumbai Indians, and
  • Rajasthan Royals
The players' auctions were held on February 20.
Cheerleaders

The IPL has been criticised by a few politicians and feminists for bringing in foreign cheerleaders, which is seen by many to not be in the traditional spirit of the game, as well as being against some Indian sensibilities purported to be upheld by these naysayers.

Indian Premier League

What is IPL ?
The Indian Premier League, created by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and sanctioned by the International Cricket Council, is a Twenty20 cricket competition.

When will it begin ?

The league is scheduled to start in April 2008 and will last for 44 days, involving 59 matches.


Prize money ?

The prize money for the league will be around Rs 13 crore (US $3million).


Team Composition ?

Each team will have a pool of 16 players, with a maximum of eight foreign players and a minimum of four under-22 players. Additionally, at least four players must be from the catchment area where the team is based.


Management ?

The governing council consists of Chairman and Commissioner Lalit Modi, Sunil Gavaskar, MAK Pataudi and Ravi Shastri, Rajiv Shukla, Chirayu Amin, Inderjit Singh Bindra and Arun Jaitley.


Television rights ?
On January 14th, 2008, it was announced that a consortium consisting of India’s Sony Television network and Singapore-based World Sports Group secured the rights of the Indian Premier League.The record deal has a duration of ten years at a cost of US$1.026 billion. As part of the deal, the consortium will pay the BCCI US$918 million for the telecast rights and US$108 million for the promotion of the tournament.
